Character Background: [There’s spoilers. If you’re currently reading the series, be warned.]
Meet Rosemarie Hathaway, frequently called Rose. She is a Dhampir from St. Vladimir’s Academy. Here, she learns how to be a proper guardian for Moroi,or more importantly, Vasilisa Dragomir. However, Vasilisa prefers to be called Lissa. They have been best friends for a very long time and was even there when Lissa's family were killed.
Before I go on, I have some things to explain so that you can fully understand what I’m talking about. First of all, I’ll go over some of the basic terms that you should know.
Dhampir A dhampir is a half-human/vampire. This doesn’t mean humans who were turned into vampires. Usually, a dhampir is born from a moroi father who fools around with dhampir women. When that happens and the woman gets pregnant, either way, they are a dhampir. You’d think that a dhampir and dhampir would make a moroi if pregnant, but it doesn’t work that way. The child is still a dhampir. A dhampir has a human figure and can be out in the sunlight or eat actual food. They have a better chance at fitting in within human society then moroi do. Most dhampirs, since early childhood, have been taught [practically beat into their heads] that moroi are the more important ones. Once graduated from St.Vladimir's, they spend the rest of their lives protecting the moroi they were selected to protect, particularly royal ones. There are some occasions when a dhampir does not do this, however is very disgraceful and looked down upon. This is especially because many of them who do so end up as blood whores.
Moroi A moroi is a full fledged vampire. The only to be a moroi is to be born from parents who are both moroi. Many moroi are from royal families, though not all of them are. A moroi has the ability to use magic and when they grow older, they specialize in a few different possibilities. There is fire, air, water, and earth that are common. However, it has been found out that there is a rare one called spirit, which deals with healing wounds, visiting people’s dreams, and many other abilities that are still unknown. There is not much known about what it can or cannot duebecause this ability has just been found out about. Though, people with this rare element tend to suffer from insanity over time because the more they use it the more harmful it becomes. Different people have different ways to cope with it. I.E. drinking, smoking, or other ways. They also have an amazing ability to charm someone to do what they want. Spirit users have a stronger ability then other moroi. However, some moroi [-cough-Christian-cough-] suck at it. All moroi are born with this ability, thought not everyone is good at it. It is important to understand that the magical elements people specialize are not to be used for anything by defense. However, lately, it has become more common and more moroi are open to use it in order to fight along side their gaurdians, just as they did centuries ago. The physical appearance of a moroi is similar to a super model, in a girl’s case of course. They have pale looking skin.
Strigoi A strigoi can be a few things. Usually, a strigoi was some sort of vampire, moroi or dhampir, who have killed someone during drinking someone’s blood. The second case scenario would be when a strigoi turns a dhampire or moroi into a strigoi by force. Either way, when you become a strigoi, you become very pale, almost white and cold. Your eyes become red and if you were a moroi, you lost all magical powers and cannot get past magical barriers, such as the stakes that were put up around the school because they only allow living things pass. Strigoi cannot touch things like stakes. However, you become very fast and powerful, even if you are a new strigoi. If you encounter one and you delay, it’s very possible to find yourself dead if you hesitate. You lose a side of you that you once treasured. For instance, you would rather die then become a strigoi, but when you actually become one, you lose that side of you and gladly welcome it, saying it’s worth it. They also have the ability to charm people into doing what they want, much stronger then any other moroi do. Their bites are like drugs, intoxicating people and making them loopy.
Feeder A feeder is a human that allows their bodies to be used for the sake of feeding the moroi at St.Vladimirs and a few other various places. Most the time, they are so intoxicated by their bites that they willingly allow them to bite them or even crave for it. They are the main source of "food" for the moroi at the academy.
Blood whore A blood whore is anyone who allows a moroi to drink their blood during sex. This is a derogatory term and is highly looked down upon. Most the time, it refers to a dhampir.
Now that that’s out of the way, Lissa is the last remaining Dragomir left, having her parents and her brother Andre killed in a car accident. Rose, some how or another, should have been killed too, but she was saved by Lissa’s spirit ability unknowingly. This left her the title of “princess”. After this event, Rose had become what they call, "shadow kissed". She is able to tell when Lissa is in trouble and can venture into her mind, seeing what she’s doing through her eyes and can even feel how she's feeling. In the beginning, she accidently did it by mistake, but as time went by, she learned how to do it intentionally, even if it was an invasion of privacy.
After the encounter with Mrs. Carp, who became insane because of the spirit ability, though Rose didn’t know about it until later on through extensive research on it, convinced Rose to take Lissa and run from the academy. For two years, Rose and Lissa hid in the human world. During which, Rose let Lissa drink her blood so that she could survive, though Lissa was usually sick or feeling sick or weak because she didn’t get as much as needed. Either way, they survived. However, their long illicit getaway came to a stop because they were caught at one point. A few of the guardians from St.Vladimir’s found them and took them back to the academy. Demitiri Belikov was one of those guardians.
Rose was severely looked down upon from taking Lissa with her, endangering her life. She was even stuck on a "probation" period with strict rules. If she were to break them too many times, she would be kicked out of St.Vladimirs and would not be allowed to be Lissa's gaurdian. Their illicit escape for so long got behind the others in her classes. She was ordered to have training sessions before and after school. Who was the guardian who became her coach? It was none other then Demitri Belikov. He is a 24-year-old god that’s the most powerful and talented dhampir that Rose knows, in her thoughts. She also claims him to be the most "bad ass sexy god". That’s not all. It was also decided that Rose was too reckless to be Lissa’s guardian and Demitri was assigned as her guardian. Rose was outraged by this and offended. She would never allow Lissa get hurt. They were convinced to let Rose stay a guardian, but Demitri would still stay as a guardian to Lissa, along with Rose.
Overtime, Rose and Demitri became closer and they would have challenges with each other on a frequent basis. She even made time to tease him about his odd love for western books, "zen life lessions", as she put it, and oldies music she often complained about. His training sessions were hard and Rose often found herself beat up or tired after them. When Lissa returned, many people wanted to be her friend. One person in particular, Natilie Dashkov, is close to them as well as Mason Ashford, Rose’s best friend aside from Lissa. Although, not everyone adores Lissa. Mia Rinaldi has a long standing grudge against Lissa, and also Rose by default, because of what Lissa’s brother Andre did to her before his death. It was found out that he dated Mia and used her, though Lissa continued to deny this and say he wasn't like that. This doesn’t help when her boyfriend at the time Aaron, who once dated Lissa, falls for Lissa again. This makes her jealous and even more of a grudge towards Lissa.
At one point, Rose and a popular moroi sneaked out to a private area. They were about to have sex, but Rose kept saying no. Demitri catches them in the act, beating the crap out of him for it and harshly punishing Rose for even thinking of it. Though, she pretty much suffered through a much harder training session then usual. When the boy leaks out false rumors and exposes what happened, people start to call Rose a blood whore. Lissa, who really dislikes this, decided to help Rose since she’s always helped her. She charms her way to people, making them like her to stop the degrading term towards Rose. Rose, however, does not like her doing this, and asks Lissa to stop over time.
Lissa insists that she can’t because everyone is starting to treat her better and they get in a few arguments over how Lissa had changed. Around that time, they encountered a meeting with Christian Ozera, another royal moroi who specialized in fire. When the boy and his friend were harassing Lissa and Rose, Christian set one of them on fire. [Yeah, he’s kind of psychotic at first]. Using magic for anything but defense purposes were looked down upon. Due to her "probation", per se, she did her best to keep from trouble for Lissa’s sake, but sliped up here and there. One night, she went to a party and got drunk. When Lissa was in danger, she was unable to defend her. It finally registered to her the danger of drinking. She was unable to tell where she was or if Lissa needed help while intoxicated. She vowed not to drink again. From there one, she became more dedicated and did her best to protect Lissa.
There are a few times when things happened to Lissa. At one point, a dead bird was found in her room. Lissa, who has survivor’s guilt and depression issues mostly due to her spirit element, had a craving to save this bird, because she hates seeing injured animals. That wasn't all. Thanks to Mia’s jealous, she continued to bully Lissa and press her emotions. At one point to get even, Lissa stole Aaron from Mia, dating him again. Lissa and Christian had talked various times by then, but it becomes obvious that Christian had feelings for Lissa. Though, they have a fight that's partially the thanks of Rose, and don’t talk for days. Rose hadn’t liked Christian and had told him that Lissa didn’t care about him and a few other hurtful things. After a while, Rose regretted all of this. She felt terrible seeing Lissa so mad that Christian was being rude to her and Christian believed Rose. After a while, it turned out that Lissa dumped Aaron again. After Rose admits it was her fault, Lissa became mad at her, but forgave her. It wasn’t long after until Christian and Lissa talked it out and started to date.
Rose finally got mad at Mia for trying to destroy Lissa’s life just because of a break up that happened between Mia and Andre, Lissa’s brother. When she was told by Mason that Mia’s parents weren’t royal and they were really just workers for another family, she used this as black mail, spreading the rumor around. In the end, it ruined Mia and people began to stop talking to her, unless it was making fun of her. At one point, she was the queen B and people were always around her.
Christian and Lissa dating was a huge shock for people. That's because Christian was a royal moroi, but his name had a bad reputation because his parents turned strigoi by choice. He was often thought as turning into one himself because of his parents and became the anti-social, sarcastic bastard he is now. After a lot of research on St. Vladimir and his guardian Anna, Rose found out that Anna committed suicide from the madness and anger she sucked from St. Vladimir. This made Rose very concerned that she would do the same. This is also when she found out Anna was also shadow kissed and had the same thing Rose had with Lissa. However, when a close friend of Lissa’s parents and father of Natilie, Victor Dashkov, kidnapped Lissa because he recognized her spirit abilities, things start to get dangerous.
It is discovered that he has Sandovsky’s disease, keeping him from ever becoming “king” of moroi. He tortured Lissa into curing his disease, throwing her in a jail. To keep Rose away, he sent a package to her. She found a pendant inside and wore it. When Rose found Lissa was in trouble, she went to Demitri, but forgot it when she came face to face with Demitri. Both Demitri and Rose fell under a deep earth charm that caused them to want each other uncontrollably. They snapped out of it in time, just before they actually had sex [a lust charm, since Victor specializes in earth.] They got ready and left for Lissa. When they arrived, they went to save Lissa.
It wasn't long after when they did save her and arrested Victor that he requested that Natilie become a strigoi to save him. She did as he wished and when they arrived to stop her, she literally threw Rose to the wall as if she was just a paper clip. Even becoming a new strigoi, she was extremely powerful. It's a shame that he would get his own daughter to go strigoi, but Demitri had to kill her. It was found out that Demitri and Rose had fallen in love, but they couldn’t be together because that would put Lissa at risk. So, they tried to avoid it.
Rose tagged along with Demitri to go to someone, his own mentor, for her upcoming test. Instead, they find out that the powerful royal family and guardians to them were all massacred by strigoi. They found that the stakes were destroyed. Since strigoi can't pass by or touch stakes, they concluded that humans were aiding strigoi in order to gain that same power. St. Vladimir’s goes on red alert, sending the moroi and dhampir to a moroi ski lodge for the vacation, to keep them all together in one place. Many parents were concerned and wanted to take their children out. During that time, Mason shows that he likes Rose romantically, and she attempts to be with him. But when it all came down to it, she couldn’t do it and had to tell him it wasn’t possible. Mason didn’t take this well. They hear news of another royal family and its guardians being massacred.
One by one, royal families were being killed. Mason, Mia, who became friends afterwards, Christian, and Eddie decided that they need to take care of them and kill them off. Rose found them out and tried to convince Mason that it was suicide to try it. That didn't work. They just argued and fueled his anger. They set off to kill these strigoi. Rose decided immediately that she couldn’t let them do this and it was dangerous. She followed after them. When she finally found them, she tried to convince them to come back because they would just get themselves killed. However, Mason wouldn’t comply, still mad at Rose. It didn’t take long until strigoi found them.
They were thrown into a cell, captured by a powerful strigoi named Iasiah and another weaker strigoi. He left them in there for days, waiting for either one of them to get hungry enough to kill another or for one of them to offer to become a strigoi. The rest would all die. Either way, it would mean killing a friend, becoming a strigoi, or being killed. Rose and Christian devised a plan without speaking. Christian got up, going to Rose and saying, “I’m sorry Rose. I can’t take it anymore” and fake bit her as she faked that she was in pain. When Iasiah thought it was real, he went to open it to let Christian out. That’s when they all made their move to escape. Rose made sure the others were out, but stayed behind to fight the strigoi. However, when Mason came back to save Rose, she told him to get out of there and she’d be fine. Mason wouldn’t leave her alone to fight them alone. That was a mistake on his part, however.
That’s when Iasiah took his chance and snapped his neck. Mason was murdered in front of Rose and even right next to her. She was so taken aback by this that she became a mess. She started to cry and say that he couldn’t be dead. After that, Rose went to psycho mode. She became so mad that she took the decoration sword off the wall and cut his head clean off and finished off the other strigoi. She continued to until Demitri and a few other guardians found her. He told her it was okay now and Iasiah was dead. She began to cry in Demitri’s arms. They returned back to the school, giving Mason a proper burial. That moment changed her life a lot. She received molijna marks on the back of her neck. They show that she had killed a strigoi. It’s a honorable mark to receive, but she didn’t feel that way about it.
When they return back, Rose and Lissa found out that Victor was on trial for his release. Rose begged Demitri to let her and Lissa come and he would have said no, but he finally gave in, allowing them to come. He was declined the freedom, but tried to get to Lissa once again. They returned after this occurred. At the school, the real exams were about to begin. The dhampirs were assigned to moroi to follow around and protect, just as they would in the real world. Much to Rose’s dismay, she did not get paired with Lissa and instead was paired with the person she didn’t really get along with. Christian Ozera. She became friends with him, yes, but that didn’t mean that they didn’t annoy each other or anything. In fact, it was a love-hate relationship between the two. At one moment, they got along and where good friends, the next they were at each other’s throats.
Lissa insists that she can’t because everyone is starting to treat her better and they get in a few arguments over how Lissa had changed. Around that time, they encountered a meeting with Christian Ozera, another royal moroi who specialized in fire. She was unable to tell where she was or if Lissa needed help while intoxicated. She vowed not to drink again. From there one, she became more dedicated and did her best to protect Lissa.

At one moment, they got along and where good friends, the next they were at each other’s throats.
As if that wasn’t enough, the person that Rose really did NOT want to see came to teach the students their expertise. It was none other then Janine Hathaway, her mother. She had really hated her mother because when Rose was small, instead of taking care of her, she stuck to her duties as a guardian and as soon as possible, sent her to St. Vladimir’s instead. She always thought that her mother didn’t even care enough to look after her. She was world reknowned and very good at her job. This reunion did not go as well as planned. Rose and her mother got in an argument in front of everyone. Demitri dragged her out and lectured her for acting out. As it turns out, because Rose is shadow kissed, she begans to see ghosts outside of the barrier and more importantly, Mason.
Adrian Ivashkov came to the school because of Lissa. It is found out that Adrian also has the spirit element. To keep sane, he drinks and smokes a lot. He is the nephew of the queen. He is quite wealthy and flirts with Rose frequently. He fell in love with Rose, but because of his playboy attitude, she doesn’t take him serious. Rose gets mad at Adrian because he influenced Lissa to do the things that she should be doing. They have been teaching each other and he frequently visited Rose in her dreams. However, when Christian introduced a girl named Jill to Lissa, he says that he should take her with instead of him. They get in a fight. Christian is jealous of Adrian cause he thinks that he’s going to take Lissa from him.
More news of stakes being broken by human/strigoi teams spreads and the security at St. Vladimir’s increased seven fold, frequently renewing the barrier stakes. All this time being with Demitri, Rose has gotten extremely close to him and they both love each other. However, they always ignored their desires for each other for the sake of Lissa. When they finally give into temptation, they had sex in a cabin that was abandoned. This really helped Rose’s thoughts because Christian’s aunt, who is a childhood friend of Demitris and likes him, tried making moves and Rose thought that Demitri would end up with her.
This happiness didn’t last long. There was a big strigoi attack at the academy. Through out that whole time of being back, Mason appeared many times, never speaking but trying to help Rose. She realized she was able to tell when a strigoi was around. They did their best to protect the moroi and kill the strigoi. Christian and Rose decided that they need to protect the younger kids. So they went and killed all the strigoi that tried to hurt them with a mixture of Rose’s accurate staking, thanks to training sessions with Demitri, and Christian’s powerful fire magic. When everything was said and done, a few people were killed and some went missing.
Rose begged Demitri to let her come to save those who have been kidnapped. The strigoi were hiding in a cave near the school. After a while, her mother, Demitri, Rose, and other guardians were able to go to rescue the others. They are able to save most of the captives in time. However, when they were about to leave, Demitri is attacked by a strigoi and killed. Rose becomes extremely distressed and depressed. She did her best to go back to save Demitri, but she was pulled away. When she was brought back, she begged Lissa to save Demitri, but she said that she wouldn’t. This really hurts Rose and she becomes extremely depressed. Back when they were talking at a session, they were saying how they would rather be killed then to become a strigoi. Rose decides that she has to go and kill Demitri, because she finds out that his body wasn’t where it was before. He had become a strigoi.
Abilites/Special Powers: Rose is a Dhampir. Unlike Moroi, who can’t be in the sun for too long and feed mostly on blood, thanks to the courtesy of feeders, she is able to eat normal food and go out in the sun just like any other person. She’s very strong and has staked multiple Strigoi. She also recently has the ability to tell if strigoi are about.
Third-Person Sample: [Rose had followed Lissa as ordered. She was a dhampir, gaurdian to the lovely, last of her kind, Vasilisa Dragomir. It was astounding as to how she managed to make it as her gaurdian. Though, it felt empty. Lissa had 2 official gaurdians. Rose, of course, was one and the other was Demitri. but... it didn't matter now. Demitri was no longer alive. In a sense, he was dead. That counted for Strigoi... didn't it? It's not like they could pass by barriers because they only allowed living things past. Either way, she couldn't let her broken heart get in the way of her duty as Lissa's gaurdian. Dhampirs were to gaurd moroi and fight for them. Without being totally focus, Rose could risk Lissa's life. She never wanted that. She watched in the back, leaning against the wall, properly of course. They had strict rules of how a gaurdian should act.
Personally, the dark clothing and the stiffness for staying in one spot and position for an hour or two really bugged her. She wanted nothing more then to break loose and run around the room. That was not accepted, however. So, she did as she was required to do, no matter how much it annoyed her. It was for Lissa. She had to do it for her. Lissa was her life, literally. Everything was put second or on hold in her own life compared to Lissa's. Though, this really didn't bother Rose too much. Although, she really wanted to rebel out at times. Rose was Rose. There was nothing that could be done about that. She glanced around at other gaurdians doing their duties. They were mostly guys, because girl gaurdians were rare these days. There was one other girl there, but she had short hair. She had the want to feel her own, long hair. She had put it into a pony tail instead of cutting it. Demitri had always insisted that she just put her hair up rather then to cut it, even if it was more common to have short hair as a gaurdian.
She looked about the room, only hearing bits and pieces and hearing selective things. As a gaurdian, she was to hear without actually hearing and see without actually seeing. It sounded confusing, but it wasn't when you thought of it. All that really meant was, you have to be observent to catch any trouble that goes on, but at the same time, you were not to let your eyes wander carelessly, something Rose obviously had trouble with. You were to hear for purposes of a possible strigoi attack, but not easedrop into the conversations in the room. That was especially hard for Rose because people were so close and talked so loud. It was almost impossible to tune them out. She glanced to Lissa, who seemed bored, fiddling with her pencil. That made Rose feel a little better. She wouldn't have to worry about school anymore, thank god for that. Though, she had a lot more things to worry about. Much more serious stuff.
She told herself that everything was at ease for the moment. However, that didn't last long. She thought she heard presence of something evil. Strigoi. She felt slightly quesy, something that she had gained from becoming "shadow kissed". It hinted strigoi were nearby. She let out a silent sigh, sneaking out of the room without a trace. Of course, something like this was bound to happen, though, she never realized it could happen like this. It was stupid to attack now, but she didn't think too much of it. She followed the way she thought there was to find the strigoi. When the feeling grew stronger, she stopped. She had almost expected a novice strigoi, trying to get a midnight snack. Instead, she found herself face to face to the one person she really didn't want to approach at that time. The only person she could truely say she had always loved. That god with that sexy Russian accent and zen life leactures. Demitri Belikov. She wanted to hesitate, but she couldn't. She couldn't afford to do it, even if it was her lost love. She had to strike, but for some reason she felt like jello. Demitiri had taken that chance to grab her, positioning his fangs near her neck. ]
Roza, you forgot the first lession I ever taught you. Never hesitate to attack.
[She felt his cold breath on her neck, causing her to shiver slightly. The way he said her name... Roza... it made her want to melt, but she knew this wasn't the time for that. She had to act fast, cursing that she hesitated. How was one suppose to fight someone who mentored her? Not only did he know all her tricks, he was the one who taught her basically all she knew. What more could she do to someone who was 10 steps ahead of her?]
First-Person Sample: Just where the hell am I? I think I entered the loony bin town…
I’m pretty sure that I’ve never been here before…
But wait… this reminds me of Alice in Wonderland… Why is that? That’s so weird. Why am I at a replica of Wonderland…?
Wait… where’s Lissa?! Lissa! Can you hear me?! Damn it! What kind of responsible guardian am I if I don’t even know where the hell I am or where Lissa is?
Maybe... just maybe… I wonder if I could try that again. Although… that’s invading her privacy... Well, not like it’s the first time I’ve done it.
But… what if I get something I’d rather not see…? That time when Christian and her were… oh god. I think I’ll stay out of her head for now…
